ECO Scheme Heating and Insulation Grants

Electric Storage Heater Grants are now

available from the Government’s

Affordable Warmth Scheme.

The Affordable Warmth Scheme is a Government initiative designed to provide grants to householders so that they can replace old, inefficient heating systems.

When the scheme was introduced in 2013 funding was only available to replace faulty central heating boilers but this has now been extended to cover electric night storage heaters.

Electric Storage Heater Grants

Electric Storage Heater Grants are available to householders who receive one of the following state benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Universal Credit

Other conditions apply to all of the above state benefits except Pension Credit.

You must live in your own home or a privately rented one and have at least one faulty storage heater in your home.

We are concentrating on storage heater grants in Cumbria and in Wales because of the high proportion of homes in these areas without mains gas. These householders have no option but to rely on electric storage heaters, oil boilers and LPG boilers for their main source of heating.

Are the storage heaters free?

The amount of your electric storage heater grant is based on the results of an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) which will need to be prepared for your home. If the grant is insufficient to cover the full cost of replacing all of your faulty storage heaters then a contribution will be required. You will not know whether a contribution is needed until after the the EPC has been prepared but this will be be carried out free of charge.

Modern electric storage heaters are up to 30% more energy efficient than older heaters. This means that if you do have to make a contribution towards the cost of your new electric storage heaters, you will save money on your heating bills in future.

Landlords Storage Heater Grants

If you rent out a property to someone who receives state benefits and who has faulty storage heaters, you can register your interest HERE for electric storage heater grants. We will contact your tenant to establish whether they qualify for a storage heater grant but your permission will be required for any installation.

Electric Storage Heater Grants are available from the Government’s Affordable Warmth Scheme from August 2016
