ECO Scheme 2018 Cavity Wall Insulation Grants

Free Cavity Wall Insulation for Council Tenants - Do You Qualify?

To Qualify for a Cavity Wall Insulation Grant you must satisfy the following criteria:

How can I tell if my home has cavity walls?

Free Cavity Wall Insulation for Council Tenants may be available if your home has cavity walls but no cavity wall insulation.

Most homes built between 1926 and the end of 1982 will be affected because Building Regulations did not require cavity wall insulation to be installed then. Before 1926 most homes in the UK were built with solid walls so cannot have cavity wall insulation installed.

Typical Cavity Wall

Free Cavity Wall Insulation for Council Tenants - Cross Section of a Cavity Wall

With a cavity wall the bricks are laid ‘end to end’ so that they all the same from outside.

The internal and external walls are held together with stainless steel brick ties.

Typical Solid Wall

Free Cavity Wall Insulation for Council Tenants - Cross Section of a Solid Wall

With a solid wall there is no, or little cavity between the external brickwork and the internal wall.

They are held together by bricks which are laid across the two walls and you can see the ends of these bricks from outside.

My house has Cavity Walls, how do I tell if Cavity Wall Insulation has been installed since it was built?

Free Cavity Wall Insulation - Drill marks filled with mortar after cavity wall insulation was retro-fitted to a house

When Cavity Wall Insulation is installed in a property after it was built, holes are drilled between the bricks at regular intervals.  Insulation material is pumped into the cavity between the external and internal walls through these holes.

When the house is fully insulated these holes are filled with mortar but they remain visible from outside.

If you are not sure whether your home has had Cavity Wall Insulation installed after it was built, please check for evidence of drill holes.

What is the Affordable Warmth Scheme?

Free Cavity Wall Insulation For Council Tenants from the Government’s ECO Scheme

The Affordable Warmth Scheme is part of the Government’s ECO Initiative which is designed to help low income householders to heat and insulate their homes more efficiently.

On 1st April 2017 Free Cavity Wall Insulation for Council Tenants was introduced for properties which have an EPC Rating of E, F or G.

Insulating your home properly is one of the most efficient ways of reducing your heating bills.  Annual heating bills can be reduced by around £160 by installing Cavity Wall Insulation in a typical 3 bedroom semi-detached house with gas central heating.
