ECO Scheme Heating and Insulation Grants

The Gas Safe Register provides the official listing of gas engineers who are registered to work legally and safely on gas-fired central heating boilers, gas fires and gas cookers.  If someone is not on the Gas Safe Register they cannot legally work on gas appliances.  Gas Safe is run by Capita Gas Registration and Ancillary Services Limited on behalf of the Health and Safety Authority.

The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the registration body in April 2009 for Great Britain and it focuses on improving and maintaining gas safety standards among its 125,000 members who are qualified to work on gas appliances.

The ECO Affordable Warmth Obligation provides funding from energy suppliers for accredited installers to fit energy efficient central heating boilers in ‘qualifying households’.  To become an accredited installer under the Affordable Warmth Scheme, gas engineers would have to be on the Gas Safe Register and be approved for funds from the energy suppliers.  A qualifying household must satisfy the following Affordable Warmth criteria:

  • The property must be privately owned or privately rented
  • The householder must receive certain state benefits
  • The central heating boiler must be both inefficient and faulty

If you are going to have work carried out on any gas appliance you should ensure that your gas engineer is on the Gas Safe Register.
